ASICS started with Onitsuka Tiger back in 1949 when founder Kihachiro Onitsuka launched his company with the hopes of raising postwar youth self-esteem through athletics. Since the beginning, Onitsuka Tiger has created stylish sports products inspired by the Japanese values of craftsmanship and attention to detail. In 1977 the brand merged with two other sporting apparel companies to form ASICS, an acronym for "Anima Sana in Corpore Sano" ("A Sound Mind in a Sound Body"). ASICS has always been known to produce cutting edge performace running shoes. The company maintains its Onitsuka Tiger label for their vintage range of sneakers, the same brand that inspired Bill Bowerman to found Nike.
