Vans by Vault takes a trip under the sea

SpongeBob has managed to take Vans by Vault for a trip under the sea to visit Bikini Bottom, creating a collection which includes sneakers, clothing, and exclusive skateboards.

What began as a Nickelodeon series created by an artist and marine biologist, has become an object of university studies and a reference for creators. Pharrell Williams designed a capsule collection for his brand IceCream and also created a song with his band, N.E.R.D., for The SpongeBob Movie's album. The late icon, David Bowie, even made an appearance in Bikini Bottom, when he voiced the character, Lord Royal Highness, in a 2007 special of the show. The creators paid even more tribute to Bowie by giving the character the late singer's physical characteristics, one blue eye and the other green, just like Bowie. The collaborations do not end there, even The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Cindy Lauper, and They Might Be Giants have created songs for the SpongeBob Broadway Musical.

However, SpongeBob is not only tied to music, for in the world of fashion it has also become a point of reference. Jeremy Scott used SpongeBob as an icon in his Fall 2014 collection for Moschino. Marc Jacobs has a SpongeBob tattoo, and the underwater sponge has also been featured as one of the protagonists of the series created by Dutch artist Mike Frederiqo, who created illustrations of Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld as inhabitants of Bikini Bottom.

In sports, a team in the development league of the NBA (aka as the NBA G League), the Delaware 87ers, plus one Minor League Baseball team, the Norfolk Tides, designed their uniforms inspired by SpongeBob. It is easy to see that the influence of SpongeBob goes beyond an animated series, beyond music, and beyond fashion. As such, shoes could not be a miss.

This first collaboration between SpongeBob and Vault by Vans includes special editions of the Sk8 Hi, Authentic, and Slip-On available in adult, kids, and infant sizes, featuring vibrant scenes of the Pacific Ocean, a reinterpretation of the classic check patterns by Vans, and illustrations of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sheldon Plankton. The textile collection includes two short-sleeved shirts, one long sleeved shirt with embroidered details of the main characters of the series, and is finished off with three boards for sale in just over a dozen stores across Europe.
