10 NEW ARTISTS TO LISTEN TO IN 2019

The year has just started and it is necessary to start it by asking ourselves: which newcomer artists are we going to listen to the most in 2019? Here, we firmly believe in this list of 10 new musicians, in which women are going to lead the way.

December is the month of making ‘best of’ lists, and also of almost obsessive compilations which highlight all those people who have the (understandable) need of sharing their personal selections on social media. It is a fun month. But what’s even more fun to do on the month of January, when that ‘compilative’ fever hits and reaches even higher levels, is releasing an estimulating prediction of what’s about to make it big on a year that has just started

And that’s what we’re doing, and so, this is our selection of the ten new artists whose music you’re going to be listening to non-stop in 2019. Warning: if the Primavera Sound festival has decided to create a women majority line-up, fundamentally, it means that this year is going to be centred on women. Just like this list that is coming up.

ALEESHA. The country of Spain need a Great Dame of un-R&B in their new urban music scene, and someone who practices the sweet sensuality of the 21st century. And which bangers like her addictive All In, Aleesha has all of the chances of blowing up in 2019.

CITY GIRLS.
Their 2018 mixtape (Period) helped them to get more recognised, and their album (G I R L C O D E) by no coincidence whatsoever includes a collaboration with Cardi B. And Cardi B is the first one who should be afraid of these girls’ success.

CUPIDO.
We now have a Spanish version of Brockhampton: Cupido is the combination of Pimp Flaco’s Barcelona cute boy trap and the Madrid-based indie band Solo Astra. Together, they’ve made one of 2018’s biggest bops: the addictive No sabes mentir.

FLOHIO
. Flohio closed 2018 with an EP, Wild Yout, which confirmed people’s suspicions that she was to become the new female rapper from London destined to do grime in the 21st century, that which confirms that the concept of femininity can also be badass.

JOJI.
Born George Miller, but onn YouTube he changed his name thousands of times (DizastaMusic, FilthyFrank, Pink Guy) to make funny memes until he took a dramatic turn... He has now become a true R&B artist addicted to making millennial ballads.

KING PRINCESS.
She’s already well-known for championing queer love and she only has a few songs out. However, those songs are so personal that they become electrified mortal traps with a high emotional voltage.

SLOWTHAI.
Isn’t it time for hip-hop to decentralise from big cities? This is what British Slowthai is trying to achieve, instead of rapping about his life on London, he’s reclaim what it means to grow up in a tiny town away from major cities.

SNAIL MAIL.
His album Lush has managed to slip through nearly all ‘best of’ lists from 2018, almost by surprise... And that’s why it is easy to foresee that 2019 will be when Snail Mail’s folk-rock is going to become artist Angel Olsen’s natural successor.

TIERRA WHACK.
Whack World is a album that lasts a quarter of an hour and it is comprised of 15 songs that last a minute each. This is also the confirmation of the unprejudiced approximation of Tierra Whack, in which we’re seeing that hip-hop is going to be extremely stimulating this year of 2019.

TIRZAH.
Behind the phenomenon that is Tirzah there is an old friend of the avant-garde pop genre: Mica Levi, who’s always helping with the production of her songs. This might be why they sound like the ideal kind of pop for the year that has just started to bathe in sweetness.
