IS HONEY DIJON FASHION’S NEWEST OBSESSION?

The rise of Honey Dijon as one of the most important DJs of the world’s electronic scene has been palpable for quite a while now… But it may come as a surprise to many the fact that this artist has every chance of becoming the fashion world’s newest obsession. We’re about to explain to you why.

“As a trans woman of colour, I’ve never imagined that this would be possible. Thank you, Adrian Joffe and COMME des GARÇONS for allowing me to represent my culture, community, and love of house music. I am truly honoured.” That was the statement with which Honey Dijon announced on her own Instagram page that we’re about to get a (much-anticipated) collaboration with the brand COMME des GARÇONS that should arrive during these Summer months or the beginning of fall, by the latest. It will be a line which, initially, as expected, will opt for suitcases for DJs and t-shirts. And the best part is that the name of the aforementioned line couldn’t be any bolder. Honey F—ing Dijon. Of course.

Some may have been taken by surprise by the fact that Honey Dijon has been able to enter the world of fashion in the biggest way possible… But it just so happens that she has been here for a while now. In fact, she had been here long before her name was revealed as one of the most stimulating hyped-up people in the world of music: her vision as a DJ, always being loyal to her name (she’s sweet but at the same time spicy, just like the honey and mustard sauce she makes reference to) and she’s been headlining clubs and festivals all around the world. But, before that, Honey Dijon compulsively collected magazines like i-D, W or the Italian edition of Vogue. Steven Meisel is one of her idols. And, in fact, not to sound rude, most likely there aren’t many DJs out there who even know who Steven Meisel is.

As it just so happens in these cases, this is a family kind of affair. Honey Dijon’s uncle had a tailoring business in which the future DJ spent hours and hours navigating through patterns and designs, but also through magazines like Vogue or GQ. It’s no surprise that her rise as an essential DJ of the world’s house scene went along with a very specific weight that each time became more and more important in the fashion world. In 2017, for example, she soundtracked Kim Jones’ Louis Vuitton show. Since then, she has created mixes for brands like Dior or Burberry, and for designers like Riccardo Tisci.

And so it’s kind of wise to say that Honey Dijon’s fashion career has only just begun… In the end, her rise, both in fashion and music, answers to a very palpable need of giving further visibility to trans artists. She even states that she had been spinning records in obscurity in her hometown of Chicago for many years before the fight for trans visibility had reached the public eye and, suddenly, one day, people started to pay more attention to her. Should we have discovered her before? Of course. Does that prevent us from enjoying her in the future as if there were no tomorrow? Not at all.
