The passions of Shinsuke Takizawa, the creator of NBHD

The lives of some of Japan's leading streetwear creators are intertwined as are their brands. Shinsuke Takizawa (NBHD) shares with Keizo Shimizu (Needles), Tetsu Nishiyama (WTAPS), Hiroshi Fujiwara and Nigo a passion for American culture and its most classic designs, which over time has evolved into new references based on functionality.

Neigborhood is often associated with creations derived from biker culture, precisely because it is one of Takizawa's first passions. Even though Japan had created a powerful motorcycle industry and, consequently, some fascinating subcultures, Takizawa was more interested in American models. Many of his references involve a vital process that mixes the beginnings of British punk and trips to the US where he acted as a buyer.

At the end of the eighties and back in Japan, Takizawa met Hiroshi Fujiwara, who suggested he join Major Force, one of the record labels that broke down the barrier separating music from fashion. Major Force's graphics and merchandising approach greatly influenced Mo'Wax, the British label that revived Futura.

In 1994, Takizawa opened his own store in Harajuku, the neighborhood where Nowhere (with Hiroshi Fujiwara and Nigo), WTAPS and Nepenthes were also born. His approach to design continues to be tremendously respectful of classic American designs, evolving from biker style to functional creations full of references to the subcultures from which Shinsuke Takizawa draws.
