Y-3: CRAFTING AND BIKER SUBCULTURE IN THE LATEST DROP

Yohji Yamamoto and adidas enter 2020 with a preview of their new collection that explores the legacy of Japanese culture and traditional crafting techniques. Y-3's famous multi-layered silhouettes and their bold proportions are combined with elements inspired by Japanese subcultures.

The first drop, CRAFT, adds craftsmanship into Yohji Yamamoto's lines, combining elegant silhouettes with luxurious fabrics and dramatic proportions. The embroidered elements include the writings "Y-3" in the phonetic alphabet katakana and "I Love You" in Kanji, while a crow appears with a double meaning: on the one hand it recalls one of the first nicknames of Yohji Yamamoto, on the other one, the iconography of Bōsōzoku, a Japanese urban subculture.

Originally inspired by rocker culture, the Bōsōzoku personalize their bikes with a radical and artisanal style, mixing an aesthetic inherited from Japanese imperialism with details that seem taken from science fiction.

A more progressive approach to design is undertaken in footwear, with Y-3 KAIWA and Y-3 RHISU RUN, two models that show the innovative aesthetics following Yamamoto in his alliance with adidas. While KAIWA has already become a Y-3 staple, RHISU RUN takes advantage of adidas' technological experience with BOOST and sports a light and breathable design made of mesh, suede and leather, with reflective touches.

CRAFT is only the first drop of the Y-3 collection, which will reveal its new ideas during the next season.
