YUKA MIZUHARA IS HERE TO TAKE OVER HER SISTER KIKO’S CROWN

Kiko Mizuhara’s name has become essential in order to understand the West’s fever in regard to Asian fashion in general and specifically Japanese fashion. But be warned, because her sister Yuka Mizuhara has just entered the game, and it’s her time to shine her own light both in the runway and when it comes to turning whichever tables come her way.

Can we stop fuelling the myth of how difficult it is to grow under your much more famous older sibling’s shadow? Because, in all honesty, the new generations are handling it very well, and suddenly it turns out that Poppy Delevingne’s younger sister, Cara has even surpassed her in regards to fame. Without having any kind of bad blood. Each one of them is doing their own thing, names as what seems to be the case of the Mizuhara sisters.

After all, both of them have some of the most fascinating DNA of the of recent years: having an American father (Kiko was even born in the United States before moving to Kobe, in Japan, at the age of two) and a Japanese mother who’s a descendant of Zainichis, a Korean-Japanese community of a country that has always been very unique.

Not surprisingly, the neighbourhood of Shibuya has become the operational headquarters from where the Mizuhara sisters have launched campaigns that have dominated the world. Even though Kiko is already an established model and actress – and is also known for her social networking, characteristic of idols and it girls–, Yuka is the one to have just found her place. Even though she seems to have her priorities straight: it’s enough to check out her Instagram to see that, even though she’s skilled at walking down the catwalk (whilst still being the youngest, she’s also the tallest of the two), her true passion is DJing.

And, be warned, this does not mean that we find ourselves with another flagrant case of an it girl who discovers that DJing at events usually comes with a constant and quite meaty salary. Not by a long shot. Yuka has a true passion for it, and the fact that she has her own program in NTS, the reputable radio station, is enough proof of that. This does not play down her dedication to turning tables as she keeps exploring the possibilities of the worlds of fashion or photography offer. Because, as expected, fashion adores Yuka Mizuhara, which can be seen in her collaborations with Kenzo or Dior. The former adopted her as ambassador to one of their latest Korean campaigns, taking advantage of the model’s Asian features. The latter is a perfect match as it is born out of Yuka’s beauty obsession and her love for the nineties aesthetic of bright pops of colour.

And that’s it, that’s the natural route: the ideal situation is to state that Yuka Mizuhara is just about to inherit her sister Kiko’s media queen title. But, shouldn’t we be able to accept that there are two crowns and they can share them between each other as good sisters would do?
