Everything you need to know about Jordan: history and facts
Before 1984, there were only a few sneakers in the world of basketball. The NBA was on the verge of becoming one of the biggest events of its kind, and Nike saw this as a business opportunity. One of its executives, Sonny Vacco, came up with the idea of investing in a player who had yet to become a professional. For him, the ideal guy was Michael Jordan, who, at the time, formed part of the University of North Carolina's basketball team. It soon became clear that he would be signed by the NBA.
Michael Jordan's representative, David Falk, thought it was a good deal, but he was much more ambitious than Vaccaro, and wanted him to have his own line of shoes and clothing, to star in commercials and to be treated like any individual sports star. Nike accepted the deal.
The designer Peter Moore designed the Air Jordan I, dubbed 'Bred'. But Jordan was not the number one pick in the NBA Draft and ended up playing for the Chicago Bulls, a team with no history, no rings, and like Nike, had serious financial problems. Michael Jordan then started to wear the number 23 along with his Air Jordan I sneakers in the colors of Jordan and Nike, red and black, matching the team's colors.
It was in 1985 when Jordan won the 1985 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, and the Air Jordans were released, causing a real frenzy. By 1987, they were a true icon. Nike Jordan branched out and became an independent franchise under its own name: the Jordan Brand.
