Patagonia: brand and history

Do you know Yvon Chouinard? His name probably doesn't ring a bell, but it's because of him the Patagonia brand you have come to love so much was founded. In 1957, Yvon Chouinard, an American rock climber, started to sell hand-forged mountain equipment. After twelve years of working independently, he met Tom Frost and began a partnership with him to improve the quality of Chouinard Equipment products and to solve the supply and demand problems he was experiencing.

In 1989, it filed for bankruptcy and the liquidated climbing gear assets were bought by Peter Metcalf, a former partner of Chouinard. Yvon Chouinard, however, kept the company's clothing and gear division, which was rebranded Patagonia.

Since then, Patagonia has expanded its line of products to incorporate gear for other sports. And, besides clothing, it now offers accessories such as backpacks and sleeping bags.
